changed, or corrected without some indication of the fact, such as the employment of brackets or italics. For whatever departures there may be from the originals, the writer must sadly accept the responsibility, except in those cases where letters have been dropped out and transposed, while the sheets were passing through the press. It would have been a most agreeable task to trace many of the works to their source, but this would be travelling beyond the scope of the Commission. Some private notes, however, have been utilised, which will account for whatever unevenness of treatment may exist. A brief summary of the contents of the present part will be found in the pages immediately following. Only the more important subjects are included. A table of the Hengwrt numbers of the manuscripts examined here will be found on pages 997-8 below, with cross references to the Peniarth numbers. This will enable any one using old catalogues to discover at once if any work he may be seeking is included in this first portion of the Report. Finally, it is a great pleasure to tender our cordial thanks to Mr. Wynne of Peniarth for doing everything in his power, and that readily and cheerfully, to further the object of the Commission. Access to the manuscripts has been freely given even at inconvenient times. Whenever it was necessary to work at Peniarth, a room was always provided where the inspection could be carried on without interruption, and scores of parcels were sent to the Bodleian Library. Nor must the writer remain silent on the question of personal consideration and kindness received at the hands of both Mr. and Mrs. Wynne, whose hospitality, during many years, has made Peniarth seem to him almost a second home.
