THE TIMES

Why change the head

This question will naturally come from the Public-and er the Trues, being the PUBLIC's mod humble and most obedient Servants, think ourfclves bound to infwer.

All things have brad-end all beads are liable to change

Every fentence and opinion advanced and fupported by Mr. Shandy, on the influence and utility of a well-chofen furname, may be properly applied in fhewing the recommendations and advantages which refult from placing a ftriking title-page before a book, or an inviting HEAD on the front page of a NEWS-PAPER

A HEAD fo placed, like thofe bead, which once ornamented Temple Bar, or thofe of the Great Attorney or Great Centraler which, not long fince, were confpicuously elevated for their great actions, and were exhibited in wooden frames, at the Eal and W-ends of this metropolis, never fails of attracting the eyes of pallengers, though indeed we do not expeft toexperience the lenity fhewn to thefe great exbibitors; for probably THE TIMES will be pelted without mercy.

But then a brad with a good face is a harbinger or gentleman ufher that often strongly recommends even DULNESS, FOLLY, IMMORALI

Cucks! repeated the machine. "O word unpleafing to a married ear." Meffrs, A., B., and C. rubbed their forebeads, and looked upon the preacher. The preacher went on with his difcourfe: "fornicators and adulterer fhall not enter the kingdom of heaven." Cuckoo repeared the machine. The preacher proceeded till he came to another quotation Saul! Saul! why perfecutes thou me?" Cuckoo! repeated the machine.

The Political Head of The Trets, like that of
Jans, the Roman Deity, is double faced; with
one countenance it will (mile continually on the
fiends of Old England, and with the other will
frown inceflantly on her enemies.

The alteration we have made in our brad is not
without precedents. The WORLD has parted

its brains. The HERALD has cut off half of its

VERBAL thanks, however warm in expreffion, cannot be confidered the criterion of GRATI DEEDS, not words, prove fincerity, and by future endeavours to entertain and inform, THE TIMES will evince their zeal in the fervice of THE PUBLIC, and their feelings for the favours bestowed upon the UNIVERSAL REGISTER. Ma. WALTER, patenter of the Legographic, or Vice-The immortal Locks gives eviPress, cannot omit his tribute of thanks for the dence to the truth of this obfervation. That great philofopher has declared that, though repeatedvery great encouragement which his endeavours ly taken in, he never could withstand the folicita to improve the art of printing have experienced tions of a well-drawn title-page-authority fuffcient to juftify as in affuming a new brad, with a tial in its reports. new jet of features, but not with a design to impofe; for we flatter ourselves the HEADS of THE TIMES will not be found deficient in intelles, but the public in a pamphlet on a future day; at pre-by putting a new face on affairs, will be admired fent he will only mention a very recent one. The great heiress, Mifs Pulteney, the daughter of William Pulteney. Efq., came of age laft Thursday. The entertainments on the occafion were very fplendid, and the celebration kept at The indifpofition of Lord Salisbury is a public evil; and to do his Herefordshire neighbours juftice they think fo, independent of their Chriamas difappointment. Other and honourable feelings operate more upon the occafion.

Great expectations are formed of Mr. Fitzberbert talents in the important poft to which he has lately been appointed; and we are ready to believe that he will amply fulfil them. But of this we are rather certain, that however he may furmount the attacks of the Hibernian politicians, if the jolly fellows once get him amongft them, they will foon make him feel a want of under flarding.

The MINISTER, among his late acquifitions, has obtained a gift of an under WAISTCOTE, which, however, he has ordered to be bung up in his wardrobe, not wifhing to wear near his beart a vestment that has come from the enemy, and which, like the birt prefented by Dejianira to Hercules, is probably poisoned, and would rather raife a blister than prove of falutary effect.

THE UNIVERSAL REGISTER, from the day of its first appearance to the day of its confirmation has like TRISTRAM Sufered from innumerable cafualities, both laughable and ferious, arifing from its name, which on its introduction was immediately curtailed of its fair proportion by all who called for it, the word Universal being univerfally omitted, and the word Regifter, only, being retained. "Boy, bring me the Regifter. The waiter anfwers, "Sir, we have not a li brary, but you may fee it at the New Ex change Coffee House." Then I'll fee it there," anfwers the disappointed politician, and he goes to the New Exchange and calls for the Register; upon which the waiter tells him he cannot have it if he is not a fubfcriber-or prefents him with the Court and City Regifter, the Ola Annual Regifler, or the New Annual Register; or if the Coffee Houfe be within the Purlieus of Covent Garden, or the Hundreds of Drury-flips into the politician's hand "Harrif's Regifler of Ladies.

For these and other reafons, the parents of the UNIVERSAL REGISTER have added to its original name that of the

On Friday evening, there was a private concert at the house of Mr. Billington, in Poland Street, at which there were forae of the fr-she railers in the kingdom. A more particular ac count of it probably will be given in this paper on a future day.

Though clearing the gallery of the COMMONS of ftrangers be a fonding order, which any m ber may infift upon without being feconded, yet SIR GREGORY would not venture to put it in ex ecution without confulting his Lady who, after examining the premises, has given her opinion with.

The paragraph which appeared in a certain re (pettable Morning Print, relative to the discharge of a perion from St. James's, for having paid grateful attention to Lord George in his diftreffes is, however, not true; indeed, the report was too ungracious to be fo.

the Times gave. To other journals imitation alone was left. They might be more consistent politicians, but in the staple of a newspaper, to be nearly as good as the Times was their highest praise."

So much for the early struggles of the "Thunderer "—a title given to it from the powerful articles contributed to it by Edward Stirling-and as its later efforts in the cause of justice are shown in the Times scholarships at Oxford, as its very appearance betokens its vast importance, and as its history has been given by many much abler pens than ours, we will return to our subject.

W. R.

A few nights after, a packet, with the following letter enclosed, was dropped into the area of the house: "Sir,You are quite a gemman. Not being used to your Madeira, it got into our upper works, or we should never have cribbed your papers; they be all marched back again with the red book. Your ale was mortal good; the tankard
