FORES'S NATIONAL SPORTS.

"A series of four large engravings, after original pictures by Mr. Herring, Senr., have just 'been published by Messrs. Fores, of Piccadilly. They are, by far, the best representations of the various stages of a Fox-Chase, viz.- THE MEET,' THE FIND,'THE RUN,' and 'THE KILL," that have hitherto been produced, and are exactly the illustrations for the walls of a sportsman. The incidents are all well chosen, and everything has the merit of truth. This, no doubt, arises from the artist being himself a fox-hunter, and perfectly well acquainted with all that he describes in his pictures. The reputation of Mr. Herring as a painter of horses has long been recognized by the public, and requires no further help from criticism. In these pictures he has diversified the character of each horse, so that every animal is a distinct study; and such a stud is shown as can only be met with in the hunting districts of this country. The riders are well placed in their saddles; the sporting seat is shown; they all ride well, free from the stiffness of a dragoon or the vulgarity of a groom. The diversity of country is also well represented, and the performances of each horse in clearing various sorts of fences, &c., accurately given. The engravings are an advance in productions of this class. The letterpress description, which is published with them, is a clever epitome of the chase."-The Times. "To record these as the best hunting prints ever published, can yet scarcely give any proper idea of their excellence. They are in every way so superior to what the sportsman has hitherto been treated with, that all comparison is out of the question. Sometimes, if the artist does his part, the engraver falls off when it comes to his share of the duty; and occasionally the publisher wants the heart to support the joint efforts of the two, however good they may be. Here, happily, all are alike perfect. Mr. Herring is not only a painter, but a sportsman, and in either character he never did himself more justice than he has in this Run of the Season,' Harris, the engraver, has by long study and practice at length so thoroughly caught the spirit of his original, that the print really becomes a fac-simile of the picture, backed as it is by the judicious and liberal outlay of the publisher, Mr. Fores-himself also with a genuine taste for the thing, either over a country, or in the study, and altogether well qualified to direct the becoming illustration of our national sports. If this 'fox hunting' does not flourish, the noble science has lost its charm.-Sporting Magazine.

The above Books are manufactured with the newly-patented Metallic Paper, the advantages of which over every other article of the kind are thus spoken of in Bell's Life in London: "Another novelty is the peculiarity of the paper upon which the diary is printed, and which is chemically prepared so as to take the mark of a neat copper style,' the advantage thereof over the old metallic pencil being that it never bends or wears down, requires no cutting, and writes delightfully; in fact, in an emergency, a person can write as well upon the paper in question with his cravat pin as with a pencil! Messrs. Delarue are applying this new patent to their Betting Books, the advantages of which will no doubt be appreciated by the racing public."

FOR HORSES.

AUTUMN AND SPRING are the Seasons the CONDITION of

HORSES ought to be looked to, when they are generally rough coated, hide bound, and altogether debilitated and out. of tone, perhaps proceeding from irregular or over-reached exercise, musty or innutritious feeding, which always causes Worms, and induces the most destructive disorders, even to the death of the Horse; but may in such seasons be entirely eradicated by administering

GIBTON'S ORIGINAL WORM AND CONDITION POWDERS,

as a safe and certain remedy for destroying all species of worm, and removing and keeping back diseases. And particularly if given at this season, autumn, and in the spring, they will put the horse in fine condition for the coming season, and give him additional strength and vigour, purify his blood, and add a fine gloss to his coating; and may be administered without making any alteration in either food or labour. And as the horse will take these powders freely, the groom will have but little trouble in giving them.

Sold in boxes, with the Purgative Ball, at 3s. 9d., with a Treatise.

The Public are particularly requested to observe that the Signature of Robert N. Gibton is on each wrapper. Sole Wholesale Agent, W. EDWARDS, 67, ST. PAUL'S, LONDON, and by most respectable Chemists and Booksellers.

HUNTING AND RIDING. BAILEY, of 418, Oxford Street, continues

to make famous SUSPENSORY BANDAGES which have prevented serious accidents by wearing them. They are made to any pattern for 3s., 4s., and 5s. each. Size of the waist is all that is required. Postage Stamps may be sent. Gentlemen may have them made to their own pattern. Also laced stockings, knee-caps, trusses, &c. Bailey's new Bandage may be had through the Post at 6d. and 7d. per yard.

Address, WM. HUNTLEY BAILEY, 418, Oxford Street, London.

ΜΕ

ESSRS. HOWARD and CLINTON, TURF ADVISERS, take their usual place in this journal with more than ordinary satisfaction. The present will be the most agreeable season we have had. Those acari of the betting world, "The Tipsters," are almost swept away. "Legitimacy," however, rises the stronger when "Charlatanism" is extinguished; and the present season will put every man's capacity to the proof; and we cheerfully go to work, with the knowledge that on our merits alone we must now stand or fall.

Except the last, but one horse was sent for each race.

The above ought to be a sufficient guarantee for the value of our advice, and the truth of our previous statements, that with the increased resources now at our command we can positively ensure an average success; but that if a little "good fortune" should conjoin with our "good information," the most brilliant results may be anticipated.

We stand alone in the profession we have adopted. It is a singular thing that, before we made the attempt, no man or company of men ever tried what might be the result of endeavouring to pick out the winner of a given race, by first employing trusty agents "at," where they cannot be got "in," all the principal stables, to report every movement; then concentrating the attention of all these agents on that given race, to obtain accurate information as to every horse likely to contest that race, especially observing those horses that are undergoing a careful and serious preparation for it (an experienced eye can easily see if a horse is not really meant, though he may be apparently doing good work).

Finally, after combining and weighing all together, to let an unbiassed judgment select that horse to which the balance of information seems to point as the most probable winner, not however forgetting to pay close attention to the most secret moves of the money market before ultimate decision. If we have succeeded indifferently well before in this enterprise, our chances this season are greatly increased.

We temporally suspended business last November (as advertised) in order to mature and perfect this our favourite project, and the sporting public will now find all their requirements. fully satisfied; and we are now in a position to offer better information than has ever before been obtainable by the sporting world-exclusive, certain, and at first hand.

A selection of "winners" for each race, carefully made by experienced judgment, guided by an extent of information never before attained or combined.

This is what we have to offer, and at what must be acknowledged an exceedingly low rate of charge, as we rely on an enormous increase of subscribers to pay us.

The earliest and latest information telegraphed from the course. One horse selected for each race. We advise those who wish to be on a good thing for the Metropolitan to lose no time in joining; good things won't keep long in a racing atmosphere. Every one anxious to make money-every one who intends to book a bet-should become subscribers to our list. We never had such information as we are getting this year; the first results are above-judge for yourselves.

TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION.-Three months (from date of entry), £1 10s.; six months, £2 15s.; twelve months, £5 5s.; or subscription to Metropolitan, £1 1s.; to Derby, £2 2s.; to Houghton Meeting, £4 4s.

Address Messrs. H. and C., care of the Post-office, Coventry-street, Soho. Post-office orders payable to Henry Howard.

P.S. We almost think it unnecessary to enter again into a detail of the extraordinary success that has attended our efforts for the last three years. Our reputation is now so widely spread, and the number of our subscribers so enormous, that it is soon known all over the country when we have pulled off a great race. Every sporting man has heard of our "pick" for the Derby 1852-Daniel O'Rourke, issued by us, and publicly advertised as the positive winner at 100 to 1. Every one has heard of our celebrated Prophecy-"Scott will win both Derby and Oaks," which he did. Every one has heard that in 1852 we advised on
