simply scraping the surface of the tongue, and examining the material collected in a drop of water under a high power. The algæ will be found either attached to masses of epithelium or lying free in the fluid. Algæ from the mouth and pharynx. A. Leptothrix buccalis from the tongue. The drawing shows the parasite from the healthy mouth, and also a specimen from the pharynx of a girl that died from diphtheria. The mass of exudation which contained the specimens (B) was of a greasy character, and the smaller tufts might have been mistaken for fatty acids. They were found in the tonsils, the pharynx, and also in the œsophagus, and were not fairly brought into view until alcohol was added. From the healthy tongue the Leptothrix buccalis may be obtained in abundance; in the morning particularly a portion of the yellowish furry material from the centre of the organ will usually afford good specimens. A high power must be used in the examination, as the filaments are exceedingly delicate. In the course of his inquiries the microscopist will meet with numerous forms of fungi and algæ differing from those which have deen described. Indeed it is yet uncertain to what extent new varieties of parasitic plants may arise in consequence of an altered condition of the secretions; but it does not appear in the present state of our knowledge that these new forms possess any special pathological significance.
