PSALM CXX. 34.

Prayer and complaint of David, on the calumnies industriously spread against him; on the length of his exile, and the unjust persecution which had now pursued him for four years; and which was at this juncture unspeakably aggravated by the death of the aged prophet Samuel, who was interred at his own house in Ramah, in the presence of all Israel; and whose loss deprived David of his only powerful support. In consequence of which he was obliged to quit the land of

Israel, and seek an asylum in the barren desert of Paran, situate in Arabia, amongst the predatory hordes of Kedarenes and other plundering Arabs, from whom he was subject to perpetual molestation. 1 Sam. xxv. 1.

2. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

3. What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

4. Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

5. Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!

6. My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.

7. I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.
