my desire; and hast given an heritage unto those that fear Thy name. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR my prayer, O God; and hide not Thyself from my petition. Take heed unto me, and hear me; how I mourn in my prayer and am vexed. My heart is disquieted within me; and the fear of death is fallen upon me. Then I said, O that I had wings like a dove; then would I flee away, and be at rest.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR my prayer, O God incline Thine ear! Thyself from my petition do not hide. Take heed to me! Hear how in prayer I mourn to Thee. Without Thee all is dark: I have no guide.

The enemy standeth; the godless come fast:
Iniquity, hatred upon me they cast;

The wicked oppress me. Ah! where shall I fly,
Perplex'd and bewilder'd, O God, hear my cry.
My heart is sorely pain'd within my breast;
My soul with deathly terrors is oppress'd;
Trembling and fearfulness upon me fall,
With horror overwhelm'd, Lord, hear my call.
O for the wings of a dove,

Far away would I rove:

In the wilderness build me a nest,
And remain there for ever at rest.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR my prayer, O Lord, and let my crying come unto Thee. Hide not Thy face from me in the time of my trouble; incline Thine ear unto me when I call; O hear me, and that right soon.

166

Psalm cxliii., 1, 7, 8, 10, 11.

Old Edtn. 171.

HEAR my prayer, O Lord, and consider my desire; hearken unto me for Thy truth and righteousness' sake.

Hear me, O Lord, for my spirit waxeth faint; hide not Thy face lest I be like them that go down into the pit. 0 let me hear Thy loving kindness, O Lord, for in Thee is my trust; shew me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto Thee. Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth Thee, for Thou art my God; let Thy loving spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness. Quicken me, O Lord, for Thy name's sake; and for Thy righteousness' sake, bring my soul out of trouble.

167

Psalm cii., 1, 2, 11, 12, 23, 24.

Old Edtn. 172.

HEAR my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come unto Thee. Hide not Thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble: incline Thine ear unto me in the day when I call, answer me speedily. He weakened my strength in the way, He shortened my days. I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days; Thy years are throughout all generations. My days are like a shadow that declineth, and I am withered like grass. But Thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever, and Thy remembrance throughout all ages. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR, O Lord, and consider my complaint: give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips. O hold up my goings in Thy path; and hide me from the ungodly that trouble me to take away my soul. As for me, I will behold Thy presence in righteousness, and when I awake up after Thy likeness, I shall be satisfied with it. Mine enemies compass me round about to take away my soul. Up, Lord, disappoint them, and cast them down.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR, O Lord, and have mercy, for Thou art merciful; and have pity upon us, because we have sinned before Thee. Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers, but think upon Thy power and Thy name now at this time; for Thou art the Lord our God, and Thee, O Lord, will we praise.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR, O Lord and have mercy upon me; Lord, be Thou my helper. Thou hast turned my heaviness into joy; Thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness. Therefore shall every good man sing of Thy praise without ceasing. O my God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever. Hallelujah.

I7I Old Edtn. 177.

Isaiah i., 2, 4, 16, 17, 18.

HEAR, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the Lord. hath spoken. I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. Ah, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

[blocks in formation]

HEAR, O Thou Shepherd of Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep: show Thyself also, Thou that sittest between the cherubims. *Turn us again, O God of hosts, show the light of Thy countenance, and we shall be whole.* O Lord God of Hosts, how long wilt Thou he angry with Thy people that prayeth? Thou feedest them with the bread of tears, and givest them plenteousness of tears to drink. Let Thy hand be upon the man of Thy right hand, and upon the son of man whom Thou madest so strong for Thine own self. So will not we go back from Thee; O let us live, and we shall call upon Thy name.

* Sometimes sung as a separate Anthem.

173 Old Edtn. 179.

HEAR ye, Israel, what the Lord speaketh; O hadst thou heeded My commandments! Who hath believed our report,

and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and His Holy One: I am He that comforteth, be not afraid; for I am thy God, I will strengthen thee. Say who art thou, that thou art afraid of a man that shall die; and forgettest the Lord thy maker, Who hath stretched forth the heavens and laid the earth's foundations? Be not afraid, thy help is near. Though thousands languish, and fall beside thee, and ten thousand around thee perish, it shall not come nigh thee.

74 old Edtn. 180.

Psalm lxxix, 8, 9.

HELP us, O Lord, for the glory of Thy name. O deliver us for Thy mercies' sake, and be merciful unto our sins for Thy name's sake. O remember not our old sins, but have mercy upon us, for we are come to great misery.

Exodus x. Ps. cv., 36, 37; lxxviii., 53.

175 Old Edtn. 158.

He sent a thick darkness over all the land, even darkness which might be felt. He smote all the firstborn of Egypt: the chief of all their strength. But as for His people He led them forth like sheep, He brought them out with silver and gold: there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

176

Isaiah xxv., 8. 1 Cor. xv., 34, 51, 52, 53.

Old Edtr. 162.

He will swallow up death in victory: and the Lord God shall wipe tears from off all faces; the rebuke of His people shall He take away from all the earth; for the Lord hath spoken it. For this mortal must put on immortality. Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God. They that put their trust in Him shall understand the truth. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed; in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump.

177 Old Edtn. 181.

HIDE not Thou Thy face from us, O Lord, and cast not off Thy servants in Thy displeasure: for we confess our sins unto Thee, and hide not our unrighteousness. For Thy mercy's sake deliver us from all our sins.

178

Psalm lxxxv., 9, 12; xviii., 3; lxxii., 18.

His salvation is nigh them that fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land. Yea, the Lord shall shew lovingkindness, and our land shall give her increase. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised. And blessed be the Lord God of Israel. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

HOLY, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come. Who shall not glorify Thy name? for Thou only art holy, Thou only art the Lord. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Blessing and honour, glory and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

HOLY, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power; for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created. Hallelujah. Amen.

181 old Edtn. 184.
S. Matthew xxi., 9. S. Luke, xix., 38.

HOSANNA to the Son of David: blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord! Blessed be the King of Israel; blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest places. Hosanna in the highest heavens.

182 old Edtn. 185.

Psalm cxxxix., 17, 23, 24.

How dear are Thy counsels unto me, O God: O how great is the sum of them. Try me, prove me, and examine my thoughts, and seek the ground of my heart. Look well if there be any way of wickedness in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
