O LORD, my God, I will exalt Thee, I will praise Thy Name, for Thou hast done amazing things; Thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. For Thou hast been a defence to the poor and needy in distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, a shelter against the raging tempest. Lo! this is our God, we have waited for Him, and He will save us, we will rejoice and be glad in His salvation.

O LORD my God, hear Thou the prayer Thy servant prayeth; have Thou respect unto his prayer. Hear Thou in heaven Thy dwelling-place: and when Thou hearest, Lord, forgive.

359 old Edtn. 364.

Psalm xxii., 1, 14, 16, &c.

O LORD my God, why hast Thou forsaken me, and art so far from my health, and from the words of my complaint? I am poured out like water, all my bones are out of joint; my heart also in the midst of my body is like melted wax. But be not Thou far from me, O Lord; Thou art my succour, haste Thee to help me; for many dogs are come about me, and the counsel of the wicked layeth siege against me. They pierced my hands and my feet, I may tell all my bones; they stand staring and looking upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

O LORD, open Thou my lips, and my mouth shall shew forth Thy praise; for Thou desirest not sacrifice, else would I give it; Thou delightest not in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise. Do good in Thy good pleasure unto Zion, built Thou the walls of Jerusalem.

O LORD our Governor, how excellent is Thy name in all the world! Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast Thou ordained strength because of Thine enemies, that Thou mightest still the fruitless rage of the enemy and the avenger. I will consider Thy heavens, even the works of Thy Almighty Hands; the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained. What is a mortal, O Jehovah, that Thou art mindful of him, and the son of man, that Thou visitest him? For Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, Thou hast crowned him with glory and honour.

362

Psalm viii., 1, 3, 4, 5.

O LORD our Governor, how excellent is Thy Name in all the world: Thou that hast set Thy glory above the heavens! I will consider the heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained. Lord, what is man that Thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that Thou so regardest him? Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and honour. Amen.

Psalm viii., 1, 4, 5,

O LORD our Governor, how excellent is Thy Name in all the world: Thou that hast set Thy glory above the heavens! Lord, what is man, that Thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that Thou visitest him? Thou madest him lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and worship.

Thou makest Him to have dominion of the works of Thy hands and Thou hast put all things in subjection under His feet. All sheep and oxen: yea, and the beasts of the field; the fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea: and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. 0 Lord our Governor: how excellent is Thy Name in all the world! Hallelujah.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

O LORD, rebuke me not in Thine indignation, neither chasten me in Thy displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed; my soul also is sore troubled: but, Lord, how long wilt Thou punish me? Turn Thee, O Lord, and deliver my soul; Ỗ save me for Thy mercy's sake. Ámen.

O LORD, the Maker of all things,
We pray Thee now in this evening
To defend us through Thy mercy
From all deceit of our enemies :
Let us neither deluded be,

Good Lord, with dream or fantasy:
Our hearts waking in Thee, Thou keep,
That we in sin fall not on sleep.

O Father, through Thy Blessed Son,
Grant us this our petition :

To Whom, with the Holy Ghost always,
In heaven and earth be laud and praise.

367

Amen.

Isaiah xxv., 1-4; Psalm xxxiii., 20, &c.

O LORD, Thou art my God, I will exalt Thee, I will praise Thy Name. Thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth: Thou hast done wonderful things. For Thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress. For our heart shall rejoice in Him; because we have trusted in His Holy Name. Let Thy

mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in Thee. He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe tears from off all faces; the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth, for the Lord hath spoken it. For this mortal must put on immortality. Awake to righteousness, awake and sin not, for some have not the knowledge of God. They that put their trust in Him shall understand the truth. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. And in that day it shall be said, Lo! this is our God, we have waited for Him, and He will save us; this is the Lord, we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

368

Psalm cxxxix., 1–9.

O LORD, Thou hast searched me out, and known me; Thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising; Thou understandest my thoughts long before. Thou art about my path and about my bed, and spiest out all my ways. For lo! there is not a word in my tongue but Thou, O Lord, knowest it altogether. Whither shall I go then from Thy Spirit, or whither shall I go then from Thy Presence? If I climb up into heaven, Thou art there; if I go down to hell, Thou art there also. If I take the wings of the morning and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there also shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me.

369

Psalm cxix, 89, 90, 91.

O LORD, Thy word endureth for ever in heaven. Thy truth also remaineth from one generation to another; Thou hast laid the foundation of the earth, and it abideth; they continue this day according to Thine ordinance: for all things serve Thee.

370 old Edtn. 853.

O LORD, turn Thy wrath away from us for Thy mercy's sake; call to mind no more, O our God, our former sins and wickedness; look down, O Lord, with Thy merciful eyes, and see; we be Thy people and Thy pasture-sheep.

37 I old Edtn. 374.

O LORD, we trust alone in Thee.

372 Old Edtn. 375.

Psalm xxxi., 26, 27.

O LOVE the Lord, all ye His saints, for the Lord preserveth them that are faithful, and plenteously rewardeth the proud doer. Be strong, and He shall establish your heart, all ye that put your trust in the Lord.

373 Old Edtn. 376.

Psalm xcix., 9, &c.

O MAGNIFY the Lord our God, and worship Him upon His holy hill, for the Lord our God is holy. There is sprung up a light for the righteous, and joyful gladness for them that are true-hearted. Rejoice in the Lord ye righteous.

374

On Thee each living soul awaits; from Thee, O Lord, all seek their food;

Thou openest Thy hand, and fillest all with good; But when Thy face, O Lord, is hid, with sudden terror they are struck.

Thou tak'st their breath away, they vanish into dust. Thou sendest forth Thy breath again, and life with vigour fresh returns;

Revived earth unfolds new strength and new delights. *Achieved is the glorious work; our song let be the praise of God.

Glory to His Name for ever. He sole on high, exalted reigns. Hallelujah.*

375

* Sometimes sung as a separate Anthem.

Old Edtn. 381.

Psalm cl.

O PRAISE God in His Holiness; praise Him in the firmament of His power; praise Him in His noble acts; praise Him according to His excellent greatness; praise Him in the sound of the trumpet; praise Him upon the lute and harp! praise Him in the cymbals and dances; praise Him
