they have laid Him. Woman, why weepest thou? Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid Him. Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? Sir, if thou have borne Him hence, tell me where thou hast laid Him. Mary! Master! O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia. Amen.

578 old Eatn. 542.

Psalm cvii., 23-30.

THEY that go down to the sea in ships: these men see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For at His word the stormy wind ariseth, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They are carried up to heaven, and down again to the deep; their soul melteth away because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end. So when they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, He delivereth them out of their distress. For He maketh the storm to cease, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad, because they are at rest, and so He bringeth them unto the haven where they would be. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men. That they would exalt Him also in the congregation of the people, and praise Him in the seat of the elders.

Psalm cvii., 23-28, 31.

THEY that go down to the sea in ships, and occupy their business in great waters; these men see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For at His word the stormy wind ariseth, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They are carried up to the heaven, and down again to the deep; their soul melteth away because of the trouble. So when they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, He delivered them out of their distress. O that man would therefore praise the Lord for His goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men.

THEY that put their trust in the Lord, shall be even as

Old Edtn. 540.

THEY were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. How are they numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the saints! As gold is in the furnace hath He tried them, and received them as a burnt-offering. And in the time of their visitation they shall shine, and run to and fro like sparks among the stubble. Faint not to be strong in the Lord, that He may confirm you, cleave unto Him, for the Lord Almighty is God alone, and beside Him there is no other Saviour.

THIS is the day which the Lord hath made, we will rejoice. A sound of battle was heard in the land, and of great destruction; but the Lord hath delivered us from the hands of our enemies. Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy name be the glory. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for His goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men. We cried unto the Lord, and the Lord saved us from our distress. He maketh peace in our borders, and filleth us with the flour of wheat.

Psalm cxviii., 24; xlvi., 11; cvii., 1.

THIS is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it. The Lord of Hosts is with us: The God of Jacob is our refuge. O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is gracious: and His mercy endureth for Amen.

Psalm xliv., 5—9.

THOU art my King, O God; send help unto Jacob." Through Thee we will overthrow our enemies, and in Thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. For I will not trust in my bow, it is not my sword that shall help me. But it is Thou that savest us from our enemies, and puttest them to confusion that hate us. We make our boast of God all day long, and will praise Thy name for ever.

From the Burial Service.

THOU knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not Thy merciful ears to our prayer, but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour, Thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from Thee. Amen.

Psalm lxv., 1, 2, 5, 7, 9.

THOU, O God, art praised in Zion; unto Thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem. Thou that hearest the prayer, be merciful unto our sins. Thou shalt shew us wonderful things, O God of our salvation: Thou art the hope of all the ends of the earth. Thou stillest the raging of the sea; the noise of his waves, and the madness of the people. *Thou visitest the earth and blessest it; Thou crownest the year with Thy goodness.*

THOU, O God, art praised in Zion, and unto Thee shall

the vow be performed in Jerusalem. Thou that hearest the prayer, unto Thee shall all flesh come; my misdeeds prevail against me, O be Thou merciful unto our sins. Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest, and receivest unto Thee; he shall dwell in Thy courts, and shall be satisfied with the pleasures of Thy house, even of Thy holy temple. Thou shalt show us wonderful things in Thy righteousness, O God of our salvation; Thou that art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of them that remain in the broad sea. Isaiah xxvi., 3, 19.

THOU wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee. Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out her dead. Amen.

Isaiah xxvi., 3. Psalm cxxxix., 11. 1 S. John, 1, &c. 593 old Eatn. 556.

THOU wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee. The darkness is no darkness with Thee, but the night is as clear as the day; the darkness and light to Thee are both alike. God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. O let my soul live, and it shall praise Thee. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for evermore.

Isaiah lvii., 15, 16, 18, 19, 6, 7.

THUS saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose Name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord. *Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.*

595 Old Edtn. 557:

THUS saith the Lord of Hosts, yet once, a little while and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, the sea, and the dry land; and I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come. The Lord whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant whom ye delight in; behold He shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts. But who may abide the day of His coming? And who shall stand when He appeareth? For He is like a refiner's fire. And He shall purify the sons of Levi, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.

Isaiah xlix., 7, 13, 22, 23, 26.

THUS saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and His Holy one, to him whom man despiseth, whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and He shall choose thee. Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains, for the Lord hath comforted His people, and will have mercy upon His afflicted. Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up
