POPULAR WORKS ON NATURAL HISTORY.

A MANUAL OF ZOOLOGY,

FOR THE USE OF STUDENTS.

WITH A GENERAL INTRODUCTION ON THE PRINCIPLES OF ZOOLOGY.

BY HENRY ALLEYNE NICHOLSON,

M.D., F.R.S.E., F.G.S., &c, Professor of Natural History in the
University of Toronto.

Crown 8vo, pp. 622, with 222 Engravings on Wood, 12s. 6d.

"The advent of a new and important text-book of a science is an event which is of the deepest interest, not merely to teachers and students of anatomy, but to the general reading public. For the progress of a science towards exactitude may very well be measured by the value of the manuals published at successive periods. Dr Nicholson's Manual has this advantage, that it is preceded by a general introduction on the principles of zoology. This portion of the work is of the deepest possible interest, inasmuch as it brings up the present state of our knowledge of zoology to the very latest period. Not content, however, with giving accurate definitions of the differences between organised and unorganised bodies, of the nature of life, and the differences between animals and plants (basing these upon form, internal structure, chemical composition, motive power, and nature of food), he supplies some very lucid and elegantlywritten chapters on morphology and physiology, on the progress of development from the general to the special, on homology, analogy, and homomorphism, and on the correlation of growth. As each of these subjects involves a belief in various theoretical assumptions, on which perhaps not two zoologists in the world have the same opinion, we have to congratulate Dr Nicholson on supplying a précis of each author's argument, in a perfectly lucid and dispassionate manner. We fail to recognise in any previous zoological author the peculiar judicial art which Dr Nicholson exhibits, of showing all sides of the question, while apparently in no case obtruding his own individual opinions. This naturally places the present work on a far higher level than that possessed by its predecessors. It is the best manual of zoology yet published, not merely in England, but in Europe."-From the Pall Mall Gazette,' July 20, 1871.

"Few of our handbooks of popular science can be said to have greater or more decisive merit than those of Mr Page on Geology and Paleontology. They are clear and vigorous in style, they never oppress the reader with a pedantic display of learning, nor overwhelm him with a pompous and superfluous terminology; and they have the happy art of taking him straightway to the face of nature herself, instead of leading him by the tortuous and bewildering paths of technical system and artificial classification."—Saturday Review.

THE THEORY OF ARITHMETIC. By DAVID

MUNN, F.R.S. E., Mathematical Master, Royal High School of
Edinburgh. Crown 8vo, pp. 294. 55.

"We want books of this kind very much-books which aim at developing the educational value of Arithmetic by showing how admirably it is calculated to exercise the thinking powers of the young. Your book is, I think, excellent -brief but clear; and I look forward to the good effects which it shall produce, in awaking the minds of many who regard Arithmetic as a mere mechanical process. .”—Professor Kelland. Mr Munn's teaching of Arithmetic was one of the most impressive things I saw in my Scotch tour. ."-D. R. Fearon, Esq., Schools Inquiry Commission.
