A Hundred Years
Ago.

Excerpts from “The Observer” of
January 10th, 1836.

We have just heard that a new coinage is on the point of being issued, consisting of silver two-penny, three-penny, and fourpenny pieces, and also gold coins of 5s. each. About £20,000 worth of the silver coins are to be issued immediately.

The Zoological Society are to erect houses in their gardens for four young girafics.

The success of Miss Helen Faucit in the part of Julia in "The Hunchback" has been as remarkable as almost anything in theatrical history. It is not calculated that Covent Garden can be made to hold, at the present prices, more than £350, and every night she has played the receipts at the doors have fallen little short of that sum.
