A. I must obey.

Q. Then who on earth have the most rightful authority over you? A. My father and mother.

Q. Any others?

A. The master or mistress in school, and the clergyman of the parish.

Q. Then when you are satisfied that anyone has a rightful authority over you, you at once obey, or at any rate know you ought to obey?

A. Yes.

Q. Did God, when He gave Moses the Ten Commandments, say why He expected to be obeyed?

A. Yes, He said, "I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt and out of the house of bondage.'

Q. Explain?

A. First, I am the Lord-I am the Maker, and Owner, and Supreme Ruler over all the world. All are My creatures; as such I have a rightful authority over them.

Q. Is that all?

A. No; I am thy God; I stund in another relation to thee than that of the Lord of all might and power; I have been to thee (the Israelite) thy God, thy greatest good; I have shown Myself to thee as the God of love.

Q. What proof of this had God given?

A. It was He who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt and out of the house of bondage.

Q. Is there any authority on earth which is at all like this?

A. Yes; in some measure that of my father. He has the right of power, because I am his child; but he has a claim upon me as having been my greatest friend, and has so much loved

me.

Q. Does this double claim of God upon the Israelites seem to have been remembered by any of them?

A. Oh, yes; David, in the Psalms, continually makes mention of it,—

refers to the greatness and goodness of God.

Q. But we are Christians; has God the same double claim to our obedience?

A. Yes; He is the Lord in the same sense to us as to the Israelites, equally our Maker, Owner, and Ruler. He, moreover, is our God, because He has done more for us than for them. He has delivered us from a worse tyrant than Pharaoh, even from the devil; and from a worse bondage than of brickmaking, from the bondage of sin.

Q. How worse?

A. Because the devil has power and will to hurt our souls, and sin would have caused suffering, eternal suffering, to our souls.

Q. What is a type?

A. Something that is done as an outline or figure of something to be done.

Q. Is what we read of the history
