When the men were come unto him, they said, 20 John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour he cured many 21 of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering, said unto them, Go 22 your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, 23 whosoever shall not be offended in me. And when the messengers of 24 John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 'But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment ? 25 Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say 26 unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is 27 written, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee." For I say unto you, Among those that are 28 born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God, is greater than he. (And all the 29 people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the 30 counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.) And the 31 Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the market- 32 place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking 33 wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. The Son of man is come eating and 34 drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! But Wisdom is justified of all her chil- 35 dren.

AND one of the Pharisees desired him that he would 36 Christ anointed by a female penitent; eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, forgives her sins. and sat down to meat. And behold, a woman in the city, 37 which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster-box of ointment,' and stood at his feet 38 behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now, when the Pharisee which had bidden him, saw 39 it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering, said unto him, Simon, I have.40 somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on. 'There was 41 a certain creditor, which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly 42 forgave them both. Tell me, therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave 43 most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. And he turned 44 to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath wash

ed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou 45 gavest me no kiss; but this woman, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this 46 woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore, I say unto thee, 47 Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy 48 sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him, began to say 49 within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said 50 to the woman, Thy faith.hath saved thee: go in peace.

Christ preaches again AND it came to pass afterward, that he went through- 8 throughout Galilee. out every city and village, preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,' and 2 certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna 3 the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

Parable of the

Mark iv. 1.

AND when much people were gathered together, and 4 sower. Matt. xiii. 1. Were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable. A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, 5 some fell by the way-side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was 6 sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell 7 among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit a hundred-fold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Why parables were

AND his disciples asked him, saying, What might this used. Matt. xiii. 10. parable be? And he said, Unto you it is given to know 10 Mark iv. 10. the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God: '11 Explanation of the parable. Matt. xiii. those by the way-side, are they that hear; then cometh 12 18. Mark iv. 14. the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, 13 when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that 14 which fell among thorns, are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares, and riches, and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, 15 which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Further instructions. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with 16 Mark iv. 21. a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. For nothing is 17 secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known, and come abroad. Take heed therefore how ye hear: 18 for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

They also which saw it, told them 36 by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed. Then 37 the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about, besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear. And he went up into the ship, and returned back again. Now, the man 38 out of whom the devils were departed, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, 'Return to thine own 39 house, and show how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city, how great things Jesus had done unto him.

And he 53 put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise! And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he 55 commanded to give her meat. And her parents were astonished: but he 56 charged them that they should tell no man what was done.

Christ commissions

THEN he called his twelve disciples together, and 9. the twelve Apostles. gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure Matt. x. Mark vi. 7. diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of 2 God, and to heal the sick. And he said unto them, Take nothing for 3 your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

While he thus spake, there 34 came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This 35 is my beloved Son: hear him.' And when the voice was past, Jesus was 36 found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
