thy moral laws may not be rendered ineffectual by human devices and false notions of religion set up instead of them; nor the progress of thy holy gospel be stopped and hindered by the wicked lives and scandalous behaviour of those who profess it. Put an end to all usurpation of thy authority, and imposition upon the consciences of men. Let all animosities cease among Christians for diversities of opinion; and unite all in sincere obedience to thy laws, and in good-will and kindness one to another.

Bless our sovereign the king, and all that are in authority under him, that they.may be wise and faithful to promote the public happiness, and that the people may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. Visit and relieve all that are in misery and under affliction; and assist all thy creatures in the several trials to which they are exposed in this uncertain world, that they may be sanctified by them, and qualified for higher degrees of happiness with thee.

Extend thy goodness particularly to our relations and friends; enable them to withstand the temptations of the world; and lead them on in the ways of virtue and holiness unto everlasting life.

And now, O LORD, we recommend ourselves, and all that belong to us, unto thy care and protection this night. Defend us from all dangers and distressful accidents, and give us quiet and refreshing sleep, which may fit us for the duties of the following day.

And

And make us ever mindful of that time which is hastening upon us, when we shall make our bed in the grave; that we may never live in a state in which we may fear to die. Hear and accept us, O God, as the disciples of thy son Jesus Christ, who hath taught us to address ourselves unto thee our Father alone, and in whose comprehensive prayer we sum up all our wants:-Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BOOK OF PSALMS.

PSALM I.

BLESSED is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3. For he is like a tree planted by the water-side, that bringeth forth its fruit in due season.

4. Whose leaf also withereth not; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

5. It is not so with the ungodly: but they are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

6. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement; neither sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

7. For the LORD approveth the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

PSALM II.

WHY* do the nations tumultuously assemble together; and the people

form vain designs?

2. Why do the kings of the earth set themselves in array? and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD, and against his Anointed; saying,

3. Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yoke from us.

4. He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh; the LORD will hold them in derision.

5. Then will he speak unto them in his wrath, and confound them in his displeasure;

6. I, even I, have anointed my King upon Zion, my holy mountain.

7. I will declare the decree of the LORD; He said unto me; "Thou† art my Son, this day have I adopted thee.

8. "Ask of me; I will give thee the nations for thine inheritance, and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9. "Thou shalt rule them with a

sceptre of iron, thou shalt dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel."

10. Now therefore, O ye kings, be wise; be instructed, ye judges of the

earth.

11. Serve the LORD in fear; and rejoice unto him with trembling.

12. Adore sincerely, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the right way, when his wrath shall begin to kindle. How blessed are all they that put their trust in him!

PSALM III.

LORD, how are they increased that trouble me; how many are they that

rise against me!

2. How many are they who say of me, There is no safety at all for him in his God!

3. But thou, O LORD, art a shield around me; thou art my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

4. I call upon the LORD with my voice, and he heareth me from his holy mountain.

5. I lie down, I sleep; I wake again ; for the LORD sustaineth me.
