the committee rose and Mr. Thompson reported the bill without amendment.

On motion of Mr. Thompson,

Ordered, that the said bill be laid on the table.

The message from the Council returning bill No. 10, [C. F.] entitled "A bill to change the boundaries of certain towns therein named," with an amendment to the third amendment of this House, was taken up and the amendment of the Council concured in.

On motion of Mr. Darling,

Bill No 9 [C. F.] entitled "A bill to legalize the proceedings. of the inhabitants of Winnebago county, in the organization of said county," was taken up, read the third time, pased and the title thereof agreed to.

Mr. Darling, from the select committee to which was referred bill

No. 8, "a bill to establish a Territorial road from Prairie du Chien, to Lake Superior,"

By leave reported the same back to the House with amend ments thereto.

Which bill was then read the second time.

On motion of Mr. Hunkins,

Bill No. 16, [C. F.] entitled "a bill to repeal so much of the several acts of the Legislative Assembly of this Territory as authorizes the sale of any portion of the lands granted to the Territory by the act of Congress of June 18, 1833, to aid in the construction of the Milwaukee and Rock river canal, and to a· mend an act approved Feb. 19, 1841, supplementary to several acts in relation to said canal," was taken up, when Mr. Ham. ilton, by leave, withdrew the second amendment proposed by him, and moved that the first amendment be adopted.

Which was agreed to.

The hill was then read the third time, passed, and the title

amended by adding thereto, "and for other purposes." A message from the Council by their Secretary.

"Mr. Speaker-I am directed to inform this House that the Council have this day passed bill No. 7, [H. of R. file,] entitled "a bill to provide for the punishment of embezzling public money," with amendments, in which I am directed to ask the con. currence of this House."

Ordered, that bill No. 7, contained in the foregoing message, do lie on the table.

Mr. Long, from the committee on enrolled bills reported that "an act to provide for the election of sheriffs, judges of probate, and justices of the peace," had been correctly enrolled, which was signed by the Speaker and ordered to be presented to the President of the Council for his signature. And then the House adjourned.

Thursday, March 23, 1843.

Mr. Agry presented the petition of the inhabitants of Mani. touwoc county, praying that the acts of a certain justice of the peace, may be made valid.

Referred to the committee on the judiciary.

Mr. Long, from the joint committee on enrolment made the following report:

The committee on enrolment report that they did on yester. day, 22d inst, present to his excellency the Governor for his ap proval, a bill entitled "an act to change the time of holding

courts in certain counties of the 2d judicial district, and to provide for a change of venue in criminal cases.

To the House of Representatives:

I have approved and signed a bill entitled "an act to change the time of holding courts in certain counties of the 2d judicial district, and to provide for a change of venue in criminal cases," and deposited it in the office of the secretary of the territory. J. D. DOTY

Mr. Long, from the committee on enrolled bills, reported that the committee did on yesterday the 22nd inst. present to his excellency the Governor for his approval, a bill entitled "an act to provide for the election of sheriffs, judges of probate, and justices of the peace."

Mr. Agry gave notice that he should on a future day ask leave to introduce a bill for an act to revive the act entitled "an act for the relief of insolvent debtors," approved January 31st 1840.

On motion of Mr. Hunkins,

The house resolved itself into the committee of the whole, Mr. Tripp in the chair, having under consideration bills from the Council of the following titles, viz:

No. 19. "a bill to prohibit public shows for gain without a permit," and

No. 23, "a bill for the relief of Philip Schamburgh,"

After a short time spent therein, the committee rose and report. ed the same back to the house without amendment.

When bill No. 19 was ordered to lie on the table, and bill No. 23 to a third reading.

On motion of Mr. Hamilton,

The House took up for consideration bill No. 15 [H. of R. file] entitled "a bill to amend an act entitled an act to incorporate the village of Racine."

Which on his motion was ordered to be recommitted to the committee of the whole House.

The House then resolved itself into the committee of the whole for the further consideration of the said bill, Mr. Mecker in the chair.

After-some time spent therein, the committee rose and Mr. Mecker reported the same back to the House with amendments, which were adopted and the bill ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

On motion of Mr. Darling,

The House resolved itself into the committee of the whole, Mr. Capron in the chair, for the consideration of bills of this House of the following titles, viz:

No. 9, a bill to amend an act entitled an act to provide for the printing and distribution of the laws of Wisconsin."

No. 18, "a bill to provide for the laying out of several terri torial roads therein named."

After some time spent therein, the committee rose and Mr. Capron reported the said bills back to the House with amend. ments thereto.

The amendments to bill No. 18 were adopted, and

On motion of Mr. Hicks,

It was ordered to lie on the table.

Mr. Platt moved that bill No. 9 be ordered to lie on the table. Which was disagreed to.

Mr. Hicks moved that the third section of the bill be amend. ed by adding after the word "clerk," the following, "or delivered to his successors."

Which was agreed to.

The bill was then ordered to be engrossed for the third reading.

Mr. Walker by leave presented the account of A. Rasdell for hauling stationery from Milwaukee to Madison.

Referred to the committee on legislative expenditures.

Mr. Walker from the committee on internal improvements to which bill No. 21 (C. F.) was referred, entitled "a bill to authorize the construction of certain dams across the Rock river," by leave reported the same back to the House with amendments thereto,

Which bill was then read the second time.

On motion of Mr. Capron,

The following joint resolution from the Council, was taken up and read, viz:

No. 4, "Joint resolution relative to the adjournment of the Bession of the Legislative Assembly, commencing on the 27th of March, 1843."

Resolred, by the Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin, That the session of the Legislative As. sembly to commence on the 27th day of March, 1843, shall terminate on or before the seventeenth day of April, 1843.
