PRAYER.

LORD, wilt thou at this time restore again the

kingdom to Israel?

ANSWER-v. 7-11.

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem; and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And, while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

PROMISE-2 PET. iii. 9.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

THE PRODIGAL SON'S PRAYER.

The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty;

He will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy;

He will rest in his love; he will joy over thee with singing. Zeph. iii. 17.

LUKE XV. 17.

When he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough, and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against Heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him,

FATHER

PRAYER v. 21.

ATHER, I have sinned against Heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy

son

ANSWER- -v. 22-24.

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: and bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to make merry.

PROMISE-v. 10.

Likewise, I say unto you, There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

THE PUBLICAN'S PRAYER.

To this man will I look,

Even to him that is poor, and of a contrite spirit,-and trembleth at my word.-Isa. lxvi. 2.

LUKE Xviii. 9.

He spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying,

[blocks in formation]

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

PROMISE-1 TIM. i. 15.

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

THE APOSTLES, AFTER
CHRIST'S ASCENSION.

At the Appointment of Matthias.

Blessed is the man whom thou choosest.-Ps. lxv. 4.
ACTS i. 23.

They appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said,

PRAYER-v. 24.

THOU, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men,

show whether of these two thou hast chosen, that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

ANSWER-v. 26.

And they gave forth their lots: and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

PROMISE-JOHN xv. 16.

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it

ye

you.

When Commanded to cease Preaching Jesus.

Fear ye not the reproach of men-neither be ye afraid of their revilings.-Isa. li. 7.

ACTS iv. 23.

Being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said,

PRAYER-v. 24.

LORD, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and

earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth, against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

ANSWER-v. 31, 33.

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

PROMISE-MARK Viii. 34, 35.

Whosoever will come after me, let him deny him
