"This valuable and extended Series of the Portraits of the Illustrious Dead affords to every private gentleman, at a moderate expense, the interest attached to a large Gallery of British Portraits, on a Plan more extensive than any Collection which exists, and at the same time the essence of a curious library of historical, biographical, and antiquarian works."-Extract of a letter from Sir Walter Scott, printed in the Prospectus.

This collection of Illustrious Portraits and Biography will comprise the History of the Country, in Memoirs of its most illustrious Nobility and Great Officers of State. The subjects are selected from the highest authorities in the land, the original pictures being preserved in the galleries of the nobility, descendants of the persons represented, or in the public collections, and are painted by HOLBEIN, RUBENS, VANDYKE, LELY, Kneller, and other great masters.

the nothingness of the history of Britain for between four or five centuries, while under the Roman power. Our readers will refer to them with equal pleasure, and will agree with us in rendering tnsearches.'"-Naval and Military Mag., Sept. 1877.

ISTORICAL RESEARCH-bute to the attractive results of Mr. Ranking's Re

ES ON THE WARS AND SPORTS OF THE MONGOLS AND ROMANS, in which Elephants and Wild Beasts were Employed or Slain; and the Remarkable Local Agreement of History with the Remains of such Animals found in Europe and Siberia. Containing,-Life of Genghis Khan, his Unparalleled Conquests. Life of the Grand Khan Kublai: Life of Tamerlane; their Battles. Splendid Courts, and Grand Hunting Expeditions. Siberia described in Summer. Mongol Sovereigns. Invasions from China and Bangalla. Battles. Rich Tombs. Conquest of Russia by a Grandson of Genghis Khan. Fisheries of the Walrus, called Mammoth by Siberians; errors arising therefrom. Roman Wars, and Sports with Elephants and Wild Beasts. History of Roman Britain, ending A.D. 427.

York, the Head Quarters of the Roman Empire for Three Years. British Emperors; Powerful Fleet; Mines; Wealth; Amphitheatres. Conquest of Gaul and Spain by the British Emperor Maximus. By JOHN RANKING, Resident upwards of Twenty Years in Hindoostan and Russia.

"The author having had the best opportunities of acquiring information on the subject which he treats of, his opinions are entitled to some credit; besides the main point which he wishes to establish, his Researches have furnished several pleasing episodes and much valuable information."-Times, May 2, 1826.

"This work is not only deserving of attention for the great quantity of information which it exhibits and for the interesting argument founded thereupon, which it upholds, but for the striking character of its contents, their historical traits, and the fund of extraordinary adventure which they relate of Mongol and Oriental kings. They seem to be fairy tales, but yet their truth is certain. Plays and novels, and poems, might be written from them." -London Literary Gazette, Aug. 5, 1826.

"The progress of the great conquerors of the East is carefully traced till they became masters of nearly all Asia. The employment of elephants in war and in the pomp of state, the combats of animals, also the huntings, in which whole armies were employed, are particularly described. In attempting to shew the untenable nature of the posi tion that the fossil bones are referrible to animals brought together by inan, we have combated no now theory. Mr. R. does not claim the merit of a new discovery, but we willingly allow him the merit of furnishing data sufficiently extensive and authentic for the elucidation of the question, and his industry and research are entitled to our best thanks."Oriental Herald, July 1828.

"Independent of all theory, this work is highly interesting. The most gorgeous descriptions of the Arabian Nights are surpassed, and the circumstances related by various grave writers for fact, far transcend, in splendour and luxury, the boldest ef forts of fiction. The History of Roman Britain, as sketched by our author, is highly interesting, and creditable to his talents, and the reader who has time for its perusal will be well repaid for his trouble." There are twenty-seven pages in this review. The writer of it is of opinion, "that the fossil bones belonged to animals which perished previous to the existence of man."— American Quarterly Review, March 1827.

"Of the merits of the geological enquiry we take no other notice than as it has led our author into an active research, chiefly military, regarding the Romans and Mongols, the extensive dominion and warlike achievements of the latter being a history of which so little is known in Europe. We are highly pleased with the author's attempt to fill up

SYSTEM OF UNIVER-
SAL GEOGRAPHY. By M. MALTE-
BRUN, Editor of the "Annales des Voyages,"
&c. To be completed in Fourteen Parts.

"M. Malte-Brun is probably known to most of our readers as the author of a systematic work on Geography: he is besides the editor of a periodical digest, under the title of Nouvelles Annales des Voyages de la Géographie, et de l'Histoire;' the first is as much superior to the compilations of our Guthries and Pinkertons, as the other is to the garbled productions of our Truslers and Mavors."Quarterly Review, No. 52.

Printed for Adam Black, Edinburgh; and Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, & Green, London.

The Publishers are extremely happy to be able to state, that notwithstanding the lamented death of M. Malte Brun, the remainder of this great work, comprising the Description of Western Europe, will be completed in a style every way worthy of what has been already executed.
