FOR

THE SEVEN CANONICAL HOURS.

Mattins.

(After Midnight and before 6 A.M.)

In the Name of the FATHER, and of the Son, and of the HOLY GHOST. Amen

Bleffed be the Holy and Undivided Trinity, now and for evermore. Amen.

Our FATHER, Which art in heaven, &c.

I believe in GOD the FATHER ALMIGHTY, &c. O LORD, Open Thou our lips:

And our mouth shall fhew forth Thy praise. O God, make speed to fave us :

O LORD, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the FATHER, &c.

HYMN. Note surgentes vigilemus omnes.

Let us arise, and watch by night,

And meditate always ;

And chant as in our Maker's fight
United hymns of praise.

So, finging with the faints in blifs,
With them we may attain
Life everlasting after this,

And heaven for earthly pain.

Grant it to us, O FATHER, SON,
And SPIRIT, GOD of grace;
To Whom all worship shall be done
In every time and place. Amen.

PSALM 63. Deus, Deus meus.

O GOD, Thou art my

GOD
Thee.

early will I feek

My foul thirfteth for Thee, my flesh also longeth after Thee: in a barren and dry land where no water is.

Thus have I looked for Thee in holiness: that I might behold Thy power and glory.

For Thy loving-kindness is better than the life itself: my lips fhall praise Thee.

As long as I live will I magnify Thee on this manner and lift up my hands in Thy Name.

My foul shall be satisfied, even as it were with marrow and fatnefs: when my mouth praifeth Thee with joyful

ps.

Have I not remembered Thee in my bed: and thought upon Thee when I was waking?

Because Thou hast been my Helper: therefore under the fhadow of Thy wings will I rejoice.

My foul hangeth upon Thee: Thy right hand hath upholden me.

These alfo that feek the hurt of my foul: they shall go under the earth.

Let them fall upon the edge of the sword: that they may be a portion for foxes.

But the King fhall rejoice in GoD; all they also that swear by Him shall be commended: for the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

Glory be, &c.

PSALM 103.

Benedic, anima mea.

[blocks in formation]

me praise His Holy Name. Praise the LORD, O my foul and forget not all His benefits;

Who forgiveth all thy fin and healeth all thine infirmities;

Who faveth thy life from deftruction and crowneth thee with mercy and lovingkindness;

Who fatiffieth thy mouth with good things: making thee young and lufty as an eagle.

The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all them that are oppreffed with wrong.

He fhewed His ways unto Mofes His works unto the children of Ifrael.

The LORD is full of compaffion and mercy: longfuffering, and of great goodnefs.

He will not always be chiding neither keepeth He His anger for ever.

:

He hath not dealt with us

us according to our wickedneffes.

For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth: so great is His mercy also toward them that fear Him.

Look how wide alfo the eaft is from the weft: fo far hath He fet our fins from us.

Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children: even fo is the LORD merciful unto them that fear Him.

For He knoweth whereof we are made: He remem. bereth that we are but duft.

The days of man are but as grafs for he flourisheth as a flower of the field.

For as foon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone: and the place thereof shall know it no more.

But the merciful goodness of the LORD endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear Him: and His righteousness upon children's children;

Even upon fuch as keep after our fins: nor rewarded His covenant: and think

upon His commandments to do them.

The LORD hath prepared His feat in heaven: and His kingdom ruleth over all.

O praise the LORD, ye angels of His, ye that excel in ftrength: ye that fulfil His commandments, and hearken unto the voice of His words.

O praise the LORD, all ye His hofts ye fervants of His that do His pleasure.

O fpeak good of the LORD, all ye works of His, in all places of His dominion: praife thou the LORD O my foul.

Glory be, &c.

Antiphon-Praise the LORD.

(For Anthems fee p. 36.)

I faid, LORD have mercy upon me:
Heal my foul, for I have finned against

Thee.

Turn Thee, O LORD, at the last:

And be gracious unto Thy fervants. O think upon Thy congregation:

Whom Thou haft purchased and redeemed of old.

Send them help from Thy holy place:

And ftrengthen them out of Sion.

O LORD, hear our prayer:

And let our cry come unto Thee. Vouchfafe, O LORD, to keep us : This day without fin.

Alleluia. Praise the LORD.

Alleluia.
