En venant encore une fois puiser dans ses annales, si riches en tableaux du premier ordre, nous avons voulu y porter le goût et la lumière, et entreprendre une œuvre définitive, vraiment originale, digne des maîtres qui l'ont inspirée et du public connaisseur à qui elle s'adresse. L'auteur, M. Paul Mantz, préparé de longue date à ce travail par des études spéciales, n'a rien négligé pour puiser ses informations aux sources les plus authentiques et pour maintenir son récit et ses appréciations à la hauteur des découvertes et des doctrines modernes. — Un art nouveau, la chromolithographie, nous permet enfin d'étudier l'art et l'esprit des maîtres sur leurs propres œuvres représentées dans tout leur éclat.
