Resolved, That the Sergeant-at-Arms by and with the advice of his Honor, the Lieut. Governor, be directed to take charge of the same, and to give it such suitable place in the Senate Chamber as is worthy the gift, as a work of art, and worthy the private character and public service of the man whom it represents.

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate be directed to present a certified copy of these resolutions to the donor.

Was read, and on motion of Mr. Hogan, ordered to lie.

On motion of Mr. Ide, the Senate adjourned.

AFTERNOON.

Mr. Hogan called up joint resolution accepting the portrait of the late Lieut. Governor, David M. Camp. And the same was adopted on the part of the Senate.

Mr. Estey offered a joint resolution as follows:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives, That the joint standing committee on the Reform School be instructed to visit said school at Vergennes, inquire into its condition and practical workings, and the manner in which its appropriations have been expended, and report to their respective Houses by bill or otherwise. Which was read and adopted on the part of the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Walker, the Senate adjourned.

S. 25. An act to amend section three thousand six hundred and seventy-four of the Revised Laws, relating to Cemetery Associations; To the Committee on the Judiciary.

By Mr. Templeton,

S. 26. An act in addition to chapter one hundred and sixty-nine, Revised Laws, entitled "The traffic in intoxicating liquors ;"

To the Committee on the Judiciary.

By Mr. Brainerd, of Caledonia,

S. 27. An act to amend sections two thousand five hundred and sixty-eight, and two thousand five hundred and sixty-nine of the Revised Laws, in regard to assessing county tax;

A message was received from the House of Representatives by Mr. Stickney, their Clerk, as follows:

MR. PRESIDENT:

I am directed to inform the Senate that the House have considered joint resolutions from the Senate as follows:

Joint resolution relating to the duties of the joint standing committee on the House of Correction;

Joint resolution accepting the portrait of the late Lieut. Governor David M. Camp;

And have adopted the same in concurrence.

The House have considered joint resolution from the Senate fixing time for a Joint Assembly for the election of State Officers; And have refused to concur in the adoption of the same.

The House have on their part adopted joint resolutions, as follows: Joint resolution granting the use of the Hall of the House of Representatives to the Vermont Officers' Reunion Society;

Joint resolution authorizing joint committee on the Reform School to visit the school and report needed legislation relating thereto; In the adoption of which the concurrence of the Senate is requested. The House have passed bills of the following titles:

H. 1.

An act to incorporate the Brattleboro and Bennington Railroad Company;

H. 12. An act in relation to the duties of County Clerks;
In the passage of which the concurrence of the Senate is requested.
Mr. Templeton offered a joint resolution, as follows:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives, That the joint standing committee on the Insane Asylum are directed to visit the Insane Asylum at Brattleboro, examine into its sanitary condition, methods of government, and report to the Legislature by bill or otherwise;

Which was read and adopted on the part of the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Burnap, the reference of Senate bill entitled,

S. 23. An act in addition to chapter one hundred and fifty-eight, Revised Laws, relating to reorganization of Railroad Companies, after foreclosure, was recalled and the bill was referred to the Committee on Railroads.

Joint resolutions from the House, as follows:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives, That the use of the Hall of the House of Representatives be granted to the Vermont Officers' Reunion Society, for its annual meeting, on the evening of Thursday, November 2d, 1882;

Was read and adopted in concurrence.

A House bill entitled,

H. 1. An act to incorporate the Brattleboro and Bennington Railroad Company;

Was read the first and second times and referred to the Committee on Railroads.

And on motion of Mr. Crane, the Secretary was directed to procure the printing of the usual number of copies of the bill for the use of the General Assembly.

A House bill entitled,

H. 12. An act in relation to the duties of County Clerk;

Was read the first and second times, and 'referred to the General Committee.

Mr. Ide moved that the Senate ask the House for a committee of conference on the disagreeing votes of the two Houses on the joint resolution relating to a Joint Assembly for the election of State Officers. Pending the question, Will the Senate agree to the same? On motion of Mr. Walker, ordered to lie.

Bills of the following titles were severally read the third time, and passed:

S. 5. An act relating to Court Reporters.

S. 6. An act to preserve human life.

Mr. Bingham offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That when the Senate adjourns it adjourn to Monday next at two o'clock, P. M.;

Which was adopted; yeas, 12; nays, 11.

Mr. Burnap having demanded the yeas and nays, they were taken, and are as follows:

The Senate convened at two o'clock in the afternoon, pursuant to adjournment, the President pro tempore in the chair.

Mr. Howard introduced a bill entitled,

S. 30. An act to amend chapter thirty-six of the Revised Laws, relating to the town system of schools;

Which was read the first and second times, and referred to the Committee on Education.

A message was received from the House of Representatives by Mr. Merrill, their Assistant Clerk, as follows:

I am directed to inform the Senate that the House have passed bills of the following titles:

H. 9. An act to amend section 3800 of the Revised Laws;

H. 11. An act in amendment of section 3057, chapter 141, of the Revised Laws, relating to compensation for labor on highways;

H. 23. An act to legalize the grand lists of Burlington for the years 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1882;

H. 30. An act to legalize the grand list of the town of Johnson for the year 1882;

H. 54. An act to legalize the grand lists of the town of St. Albans for the years 1881 and 1882;

In the passage of which the concurrence of the Senate is requested. Mr. Burnap, from the Committee on the Judiciary, to which was referred a bill entitled,

S. 11. An act to amend section two thousand seven hundred and forty-eight, chapter one hundred and thirty, Revised Laws, relating to towns;

Reported, recommending that the bill be amended as follows:

By striking out in line ten, section one, the word "event," and inserting in lieu thereof the words historical anniversary;

Which was agreed to.

Thereupon, on motion of Mr. Ide, the bill was ordered to lie.
