ENGLISH SCHOOL.

ROBERT WHITE, an excellent Composer in the style of Palestrina, whom he preceded, 1510.

CHRISTOPHER TYE took his Doctor's Degree in Music at Cambridge in 1545.

THOMAS TALLIS, Organist of the Royal Chapels to King Henry VIII., King Edward VI., Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth. He was the first who composed the musical part of the Church Service in the English language.

JOHN SHEPPARD. His Services and Anthems were published in 1565.

WILLIAM MUNDY, the Composer of several Services and Anthems in 1580.

THOMAS MORLEY took his Degree at Oxford, in 1588; Gentleman of the Chapels Royal to Queen Elizabeth; died 1602.

THOMAS WEELKES, Organist of Winchester. He composed several Services and Anthems. He lived in 1670. DR. JOHN BULL was the first Professor of Music at Gresham College. He died about 1620.

EDMUND HOOPER, Organist at Westminster Abbey, and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal; died 1621.

ORLANDO GIBBONS, Organist of King's College Chapel, Cambridge, and of the Chapels Royal, died in 1625. ADRIAN BATTEN, Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral; died 1640.

WILLIAM LAWES, a Gentleman of the Chapels Royal; died 1645.

PELHAM HUMPHRYS, one of the first set of Choristers of the Chapel Royal after the Restoration; died in 1674, aged 26.

THOMAS TOMKINS, a pupil of Byrd, took his degree of
Bachelor of Music at Oxford, 1607.

MATTHEW LOCK, Composer to Charles II.; died 1677.
DR. BENJAMIN ROGERS, Organist of Christ Church,
Dublin; afterwards of Eton College, and of Magda-
lene College, Oxford. In 1685 he retired on a pension.
MICHAEL WISE, one of the first set of Children of the
King's Chapel after the Restoration; Organist of
Salisbury Cathedral, 1668.

The REV. W. TUCKER, Precentor of Westminster Abbey, died 1690.

HENRY PURCELL, one of the Children of the Chapel Royal, and became Organist in 1682; afterwards Organist of Westminster Abbey. He died in 1695, aged 37.

JEREMIAH CLARKE, one of the Children of the Chapel Royal; died in 1707.

JOHN BLOW was one of the first set of Children of the Royal Chapel immediately after the Restoration, and was appointed Organist in 1673; died in 1780.

DR. WM. CHILD, Organist of St. George's Chapel, Windsor, and of the Royal Chapels, in the Reigns of Charles I., Charles II., James II., William and Mary; died 1696, aged 91.

The REV. H. ALDRICH, D.D. born in Westminster, 1647, was tutor, and afterwards Canon and Dean of ChristChurch, Oxford; adapted many of the compositions of Palestrina to English words; died 1710.

JOHN GOLDWIN, a pupil of Dr. Child, Organist at St. George's, Windsor; died, Nov. 1719.

JOHN STROUD, a Chorister of the Chapel Royal, died 1720, aged 16.

DR. WILLIAM CROFT, born 1677, Organist of Westminster Abbey. In 1724 he published two volumes

of Anthems of his own composition.

ROBERT CREYGHTON, D.D. Canon of Wells Cathedral, died 1736, aged 98.

JOHN WELDON, a pupil of Purcell, Organist and Composer to the Chapels Royal in 1715; died 1736. WILLIAM TURNER, Mus. Doc. a Gentleman of the Royal Chapels to seven Kings and Queens successively. He died in 1740, aged 88.

Thomas KelwaY, Organist of Chichester Cathedral, died 1750.

DR. MAURICE Greene, Professor of Music in the University of Cambridge, and Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral. He died in 1755.

JOHN TRAVERS, Organist of the Chapel Royal, died 1758.

DR. WILLIAM BOYCE, born 1710, was Master of the King's Band of Musicians, and Organist and Composer at the Chapel Royal; died 1779.

JAMES NARES, Mus. Doc. appointed Organist of York Minster in 1734; 1756, Organist and Composer to his Majesty's Chapels; died 1783.

THOMAS ATTWOOD, educated in the Chapel Royal, and studied under Mozart; Organist of St. Paul's in 1795, and Composer to King George IV. He died in 1838. JOSEPH PRING, Mus. Doc. Organist of Bangor Cathedral, died about 1840.
