THE

ECLECTIC REVIEW,

FOR JANUARY, 1827.

IN

Art. I. The whole Works of the Right Rev. Edward Reynolds, D.D.

Lord Bishop of Norwich ; now first collected, with his Funeral
Sermon, by B. Riveley, one of his Lordship's Chaplains. To
which is prefixed, a Memoir of the Life of the Author. By
Alexander Chalmers, F.S.A. In 6 vols. 8vo. pp. 2896. Price 31.
London. 1826.
N none of the reprints which have appeared during the last

twenty years, has a sounder discretion been exercised, than in the publication before us, which contains the entire Works of Bishop Reynolds, now for the first time edited together. Reynolds

was an excellent man, and an interesting writer; nor is it any deduction from the value of his works, that we find in them so little of the polemic, and so much of the sound and practical divine. This absence of all that is petulant and disputatious, combined with a holy anxiety for the cultivation of all that is connected with essential truth and vital godliness, eminently characterised the writer and the man. He was of a gentle and forbearing spirit ; and if, at times, he seemed to shrink from that firm and uncompromising assertion of high principle, which might have been expected from his exemplary piety, we are quite sure that this apparent tergiversation is to be accounted for on suppositions quite consistent with integrity of conscience.

The least satisfactory part of the work before us, is the memoir; and one of its defects consists in its inadequate development of personal character, particularly in reference to the point under consideration. It is undeniable, that Reynolds exhibited, to use plain language, some of the qualities which distinguished the accommodating Vicar of Bray. He first held preferment as the adherent of Episcopacy; he then conformed under a Presbyterian establishment, and at the Restoration, when Episcopacy came again into fashion, and it was raining VOL.
