SIR FRANCIS R. SANDFORD, C.B., LL.D.,

SECRETARY TO THE COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL ON EDUCATION.

PREFACE.

THE objects of this work are twofold: first, to provide all those who have the care of the education of youth with the salient points of interest connected with all Colleges and Schools of a public character; secondly, to afford to all who are engaged in the profession of teaching an opportunity of registering their titles to this position. Within the last few years education has grown into a most important science, and the increased attention that is bestowed upon it by all classes of society, proves the necessity that a teacher should be able to show his credentials, and that the days of irresponsible masters and mistresses are fast being numbered.

The Editor begs to offer his sincere thanks to all those who have so kindly assisted him during the progress of the work by prompt and courteous returns of information, and particularly to the authorities and officers of the Education Department.

He trusts that the Edition of next year will contain more precise information from the heads of those few public schools, who have hitherto withheld it, and begs that all errors and omissions may be kindly made known to him, care of Mr. Stanford, 6, Charing Cross.

March, 1872.
