The dozen white louses do become an old coat well; well, passant: it is a familiar beast to man, and signifies love. 1) Sir, ein Titel, der der niedern Geistlichkeit ertheilt wurde, eine Uebersetzung des lateinischen Dominus. In Folge einer Verwechselung mit dem Sir, welches dem Ritter zukam, wird auf dem Titelblatte der Q. A Sir Hugh irrthümlich als the Welch Knight bezeichnet. Vgl. Einleitung pag. I. 2) eine Sache, die vor die Sternkammer gehört. Dieser Criminalgerichtshof in Westminster hiess so von dem Sitzungssaal, dessen Decke mit goldenen Sternen geziert war. Die Befugnisse dieses Gerichtshofes giebt Ben Jonson in seinem Magnetic Lady so an: There is a court above, of the Star-Chamber, || To punish_routs and riots. 3) Slender, der die volle Titulatur Shallow's angeben will, hält auch das lateinische coram für dazu gehörig, aus der Phrase, mit welcher der Friedensrichter im Zeugenverhör unterschrieb: Jurat coram me, Roberto Shallow, armigero. = *) cust-alorum, oder nach Malone's Vermuthung cust-ulorum, eine handschriftliche Abkürzung für lat. custos rotulorum Aktenbewahrer. Slender, der diese Abkürzung nicht versteht, fügt noch einmal rotulorum, zu ratulorum entstellt, hinzu. In gleicher Unwissenheit setzt er den lat. Ablativ armigero (Vgl. Anm. 3) aus Shallow's Unterschrift für armiger, das englische esquire. 3) scil. we have done. Slender erklärt Shallow's Meinung näher, indem er dabei jedoch nach seiner Weise successors und ancestors verwechselt. 6) Evans missversteht luces Hecht, wie die Familie der Lucies deren drei in ihrem Wappen führte, Shallow aber ein ganzes Dutzend führen könnte, als louses für lice Shal. The luce is the fresh fish; the salt fish is an old coat. Eva. Yes, per-lady: if he has a quarter of your coat, there is but three skirts for yourself, in my simple conjectures. But that is all one: if Sir John Falstaff have committed disparagements unto you, I am of the church, and will be glad to do my benevolence, to make atonements and compremises between you. Shal. Man hat hierin eine satirische Anspielung auf einen Sir Thomas Lucy in Warwickshire finden wollen, der nach einer überlieferten Anekdote den jungen Shakspere als Wilddieb bestraft haben soll. 7) Shallow will für seinen alten Wappenrock keinen jungen Hecht haben, sondern dem Alter des Wappenrocks gemäss einen alten, in Salz aufbewahrten. Zugleich liegt darin neben der Anspielung auf die verschiedene Wappenfarbe ein Wortspiel zwischen Süsswasserfisch und Seefisch. 8) Evans verwechselt to marry und to mar und fasst to quarter durch Verheirathung ein Wappen mit einem andern vereinigen, missverständlich = viertheilen. 9) Einige Herausgeber halten Council für identisch mit Star-chamber, Andere verstehen den Staatsrath des Königs (the king's Council) darunter, als eine von jener getrennte Körperschaft. Für erstere Annahme spricht der Text in Q. A, welcher lautet: Nere talke to me, IПle make a star-chamber matter of it. Plausibler nimmt Malone an, dass Shallow damit nur Page's Missgeschick beklage, dass ein sonst ausgezeichneter Windhund bei dem Cotswolder Rennen keinen entschiedenen Preis gewonnen habe. - fault Missgeschick, Unglück, kommt auch sonst vor. |
