ISAIAH AND AHAZ.
ISAIAH, VII. 10–14.
Moreover the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying, Ask thee a
sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in
height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I
tempt the Lord. And he said, Hear ye now, O house of Da-
vid; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye
weary my God also ? Therefore the Lord himself shall give
you a sign; Behold a virgin shall conceide, and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel. .....

Amos, VII. 10–15.
Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to Jeroboam, king of
Israel, saying, “ Amos hath conspired against thee in the
midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all
his words. For thus Amos saith, · Jeroboam shall die by the
sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their
ovon land.” Also Amaziah said unto Amos, “ O thou seer, go
flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and pro-
phesy there. But prophesy not again any more at Bethel, for
it is the king's chapel and it is the king's court.” Then answered
Amos, and said to Amaziah, “ I was no prophet, neither was
I a prophets son : but I was an herdsman and a gatherer of
sycomore fruit. And the Lord took me as I followed the flock,
and the Lord said unto me, “Go prophesy unto my people
Israel.” ...................

ing to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide
the spoil. For Thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and
the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the
day of Midian. For every battle of the warrior is with con-
fused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be
with burning and fuel of fire. For unto us a Child is born,
unto us a Son is given ; and the government shall be upon his
shoulder : and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,
The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no
end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order
it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from
henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will
perform this.
