Mr. Billings moved that

No. 4, (H. of R.) "A resolution providing for the final settlement of the claims of Daniel Baxter;"

Be now taken up ;

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Burnett moved that said resolution be laid on the table; Which was disagreed to.

Mr. Billings then moved that the further consideration of the said resolution be postponed until to-morrow, and made the special order of the day;

Which was agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Jackson,

The House resolved itself into committee of the whole on the general file of bills;

And after some time spent therein, the committee rose, and by their chairman reported

No. 5, (C.) "Resolution requiring the Secretary of the Territory to redeem certain bonds and scrip in the hands of the Treasurer of the Territory;"

No. 28, (H. of R.) "A bill to provide for the collection of delinquent taxes on personal property in certain cases;" and

No. 31, (H. of R.) "A bill to construe an act entitled an act to amend an act of the Revised Statutes of 1839, entitled 'an act concerning the supreme and district courts ;'"

Without amendment; and

No. 7, (C.) "A bill to provide for the more convenient mode of contesting the election of county and other officers ;" No. 11, (C.) A bill to amend the act concerning proceedings in courts of record, and for other purposes ;" and

No. 3. (H. of R.) "A bill to change the time of holding courts in certain counties in the second judicial district;" With amendments to each.

And also reported progress on the general file of bills and asked leave to sit again thereon.

Leave was granted.

The amendments to No. 3, (H. of R.) and Nos. 7 and 11 (C.) were then concurred in; and

Nos. 3, 28 and 31, (H. of R.) were ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

Nos. 5, 7 and 11, (C.) were ordered to their third reading. Mr. Dennis moved that the 18th rule of this House be suspended with reference to

No. 5, (C.) "Resolution requiring the Secretary of the Ter ritory to redeem certain bonds and scrip in the hands of the Treasurer of the Territory;"

And that said resolution be now taken up and acted upon by the House;

Which was agreed to.

The said resolution was then read the third time and pass ed and the title thereof agreed to.

By Mr. Brawley. A petition of inhabitants of the counties of Portage, Jefferson and Dane, asking for the confirmation of the survey of the road running from Winnebago through Columbus to Fort Atkinson ;

Mr. Sheldon gave notice that on some future day he would ask leave to introduce a bill to repeal the limitation of suits for the recovery of lands forfeited for taxes.

Mr. Hoard, from the committee on Mining and Smelting, to whom that subject had been referred, reported

No. 33, (H. of R.) "A bill to incorporate the Lisbon and Milwaukee Plank Road Company ;"

Mr. Dennis, by leave, introduced the following resolution: Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed to confer with the Secretary of the Territory, and obtain the information asked of that officer by a resolution of this House adopted on a former day, and which the Secretary declines giving for reasons this day transmitted by that officer to this House. Mr. Phelps moved to lay the said resolution on the table; Which was disagreed to.

A message from the Council, by their Secretary:

"Mr. Speaker-I am directed to inform this House that the Council have concurred in the following resolution of the House, to wit:

Resolved, (the Council concurring) That all petitions and remonstrances relating to a division of Milwaukee county, be referred to a joint select committee, consisting of the delegates from that county of both Houses of the Legislative Assembly.'

I am also instructed to inform the House of the resignation of Ben C. Eastman, Esq. as Secretary of the Council and of the election of Gen. William R. Smith, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation aforesaid."

Mr. Mooers offered the following as a substitute to the resolution, which was accepted, by Mr. Dennis;

Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed to confer with and obtain information from the Secretary of the Terri

tory relative to the appropriation made by Congress for arrearagės prior to 1844, of $13,748 41, for the payment of the items mentioned in the act of appropriations;

And the question having been put on the adoption of the said resolution,

It was decided in the affirmative.

Mr. Jackson offered the following resolution :

Resolved, That five hundred copies of the report of the select joint committee on the subject of State Government be ordered to be printed for the use of this House.

Mr. MaGone moved to amend the said resolution by inserting after the word "copies," the words "in German, French, and Scandinavian languages."

Mr. Hoard moved to amend the amendment by adding after the word "Scandinavian," the words "Winnebago and Pottawottamie;"
