That there shall be paid to John Catlin, out of the territorial treasury, the sum of three hundred and serenty-seven dollars and ninety cents, the amount by him paid out of the fund appropriated to pay the expenses of the legis lative assembly upon the appropriation bill passed October 27th, A. Be it enacted by the Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin: SECTION 1. That the marriage contract been Cynthia B. Ward, and Henry Ward, her husband, is hereby dissolved, and the parties to the said contract are by virtue of this act restored to all the rights and privileges of unmarried persons. AN ACT To amend the sixth section of an act to provide for laying out certain territorial roads therein named, approved February 11th, 1847. Be it enacted by the Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin: SECTION 1. That Philip W. Lake, James A. Maxarel and Mills D. Clark be, and they are hereby appointed com missioners to re-lay so much of the territorial road, known as the Madison and Chicago road, as is located and required to be altered and re-located by the sixth section of the aforesaid act. AN ACT To amend the charter of the village of Racine. Be it enacted by the Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin: SECTION 1. That the village of Racine shall be divided into five wards, as follows: All that part of said village lying south and east of Root river, being bounded on the east by Lake Michigan, on the south by the centre of Sixth street until it intersects Wisconsin street. thence north to Root river, shall be known as the first ward; and the residue of said village on the south side of Root river and east of Wisconsin street, shall be known as the second ward. All that part of said village lying south of Root river and west of Wisconsin street, shall be known as the third ward. All that part of said village known as "Sages addition," shall be the fourth ward; and all the residue of said village on the north side of Root river, shall be the fifth ward. SEC. 2. The elective officers of said village shall consist of one president, one clerk, and one marshal of the village, Officers and how disqual who shall be residents and voters in the village, and two ified. trustees, one assessor, and one constable, in each ward, who shall be residents and voters in the wards for which they may be elected; and the removal of either of these officers of the first class from the village, or of the second class from the ward for which he may be elected, shall vacate his office; which vacancy shall be filled by special election, to be held at such time and place as shall be appointed by the common council, and in the manner prescribed in this act for holding elections. SEC 3. The first election for officers under this act shall Elections how conducted. be held on the first Monday in April next, at which time an election shall be held in each ward at such place therein as shall be designated by the present board of trustees for said village, and be conducted by three inspectors, or a majority of them, who shall be appointed by the president and trus ices, and shall make due return to the clerk of the board of trustees; and all elections thereafter shall be held annually en the first Monday of April, at such place in each ward as shall be designated by the president and common council, who shall annually appoint three inspectors of elections, who, or a majority of whom, shall superintend such elections, and nake return of the same to the common council in such manner and at such times as such council may prescribe. SEc. 4. At the first election the voters in their respective What officers wards shall vote for one president, one clerk, and one marelected. shal, for said village, two trustees, one assessor, and one constable, for the ward wherein such voter may reside; and annually thereafter the voters at their respective ward elections shall vote for one president, one clerk, and one marshal of the village, two trustees, one assessor, and one constable, in each ward; and the persons voted for respectively for the offices of president, clerk, marshal, trustees, assessor and constable, having the highest number of votes at any election, shall be declared elected to the said offices respeesively. Sec. 5. All male residents of said village who are duly qualified to vote for county officers, and who shall have re |
