The Beacon Series A GRADED COURSE OF STUDY FOR THE SUNDAY SCHOOL 4. WORLD STORIES BY JOEL H. METCALF = UNITARIAN SUNDAY-SCHOOL SOCIETY MAR I 1911 Association, COPYRIGHT BY UNITARIAN SUNDAY-SCHOOL SOCIETY 1909 PREFACE. This collection of stories is to be used in the appropriate grade of the Beacon Series of Sunday-School Lessons. A glance at the table of contents will show that they have been selected from a great variety of sources, both ancient and modern. With the exception of two from the Apocrypha, all have been taken from literature outside the Bible. The reason for this is, not that the Bible fails to furnish material for such a collection, but in the lessons that precede this course the scholars will have learned stories from the Old and New Testaments. As the lessons were limited to thirty-six, and the number of possible subjects is so great, the reader may look in vain for certain favorites. In the choice of stories the following considerations have prevailed. They were to be teachable to children of ten years. They had to be capable of condensation into a few pages. And most important of all was the religious element. Only those stories were taken which teach some moral or religious lesson, and were sure to be helpful in the formation of character. The Teacher's Edition of this grade contains the facts in relation to the sources, with hints and suggestions as to their application and teaching. It is hoped that this little book may be welcomed outside the Sunday School, and become a companion in the home for eral reading. gen TAUNTON, MASS., May, 1909. JOEL H. METCALF. |
